Veteran Lebanese singer Sammy Clark, known for singing the Arabic-version theme of Japanese animation series Grendizer, died on Sunday at the age of 73, due to heart disease.
Many Arab and Lebanese musicians have mourned the departure of the multi-awarded singer, including Carole Samaha, Wael Jassar and Bassem Moughnieh; the latter wrote "Goodbye, Grendizer" in his obituary.
Born in 1948, Clark’s real name was Sami Hobeika. He recorded over seven hundred songs in various languages including Arabic, English, French, Greek, Italian and Russian, covering topics ranging from patriotic to romantic, including children's songs and religious Christian carols.
Starting his music career early in childhood, Clark toured many international festivals in the 1970s after being recommended by legendary musician Elias Rahbani.
He is most known for songs including Mawtent Mawteny, Khabbie Eyounek, Delouna, Ommy, Oumy Ta Norkos, Kenna Youmiy and many others.
His breakthrough came in the 1980s and 1990s when he dubbed the themes to several animation series like Gazeerat El-Kenz, Al-Sabe El-Modhesh and most famously Grendizer.
