The legendary musician passed away at the age of 80.
Drummer Howard Grimes has passed away last Saturday, February 12. As reported by Ultimate Classic Rock, the musician died of kidney failure. A vital part of the Memphis soul scene in the '70s, Grimes played with iconic acts like Al Green and Ann Peebles.
Currently, the 80-year old artist drummed in the Jazz group Bo-Keys, and his bandmate Scott Bomar released the following statement following his death:
“He was at peace before he passed. I think what Howard would want people to know about him was that his relationship with his creator, his spirituality, was the most important thing in his life. The second was Memphis music."
An accomplished session musician nicknamed "Bulldog" over his intense playing style, Grimes played in the house band at Hi Records and left his fingerprints on seminal Soul songs like "Let's Stay Together" by Al Green or "I Can't Stand the Rain" by Ann Peebles.
Once Hi Records was sold, Howard struggled financially and even faced homelessness in the '80s, but he managed to get back on his feet. Over the past decades, he was playing with the Bo-Keys, which saw him pay further tribute to the Memphis sound of Blues and Soul that he loved.
We offer our condolences to Howard Grimes' family in these difficult times.
