The funeral of a 20-year-old Marvel fan was attended by mourners dressed as various superhero characters, such as Iron Man, and Spider-Man.

The funeral of Sam Griffiths, who was from Newcastle, took place at Bradwell Crematorium on Tuesday, December 19. The former Madeley High School pupil had lost his fight for life in a Birmingham Hospital on New Year's Eve after a lifelong health battle.

Paramedic mum Nicola Griffiths, who works for West Midlands Ambulance, also paid tribute to her son.

The 43-year-old told family and friends: "To my gorgeous brave and courageous boy. I never thought this day would happen. You spent your life fighting and I was by your side every step of the way.

"You never moaned, complained, or felt sorry for yourself. You make me proud as your mum. The love and support you carried with you was a testament to your loving attitude.

"When I came to the hospital to say goodbye I told you something. There are few people who come on this earth and make a lasting impression, and you are that person.

"Sam, you will always be remembered with a smile, constantly winding me up, waiting behind doors to make me jump, who on earth is going to explain the Marvel universe to us now?"

Sam’s sister Lucy says she shared a ‘special bond’ with her brother.

She said: "When I think of Sam I think of the crazy, Marvel-loving boy who cared for others. We were close and shared a special bond that I will deeply miss. He loved to make people laugh and smile.

"He was so thankful and gave people joy. He is thankful towards our mum for being by his side and to his amazing little siblings. His last words were ‘You’re my best friend, I will be home soon, I won’t stop fighting’."

"Thank you for everything Sam and I love you."

Celebrant Matthew Turner told the congregation: "Sam has achieved far more than anyone might have imagined. We might begin to be thankful for all he has given to so many and all he will continue to give to so many.

"Samuel Jack Griffiths was a special, unique, kind and caring young man. Growing up was hard for Sam. There were lots of activities he couldn't join in with but he remained positive, hopeful and never complained.

"He began to develop his social life and a good one. He made a good group of friends. Their home was more akin to a youth hostel so often were they all there together. His friends supported him in every way. They brought each other happiness.

"A contagious smile that lit up a room. Might we be thankful for the kindness and care, a true hero."
